Day 06: Grip Changes and Inversions
with Sabina Storberg
from Sword Mastery Basics - Deluxe Edition , and The Beginner Playlist (Start Here)
Hello and welcome to Day Six of the deluxe edition of Sword Mastery, focusing on grip changes and inversions. In this session, you will learn: • How to execute the inverted grip specific to the Kung Fu Jian. Just to note that other types of martial arts may invert the sword in different ways. • How to perform an inverted grip using an outside flower movement and bringing the sword between the index and middle fingers. The final inverted grip has the sword behind the body, held with the two fingers (like sword fingers) behind it. • How to change the grip from an inverted hold back to a comfortable, relaxed hold. The process involves bringing the fingers in, adjusting the grip so the four fingers are on the hilt and the thumb is inverted, then gently flicking the sword up. • The difference between the straight sword inverted grip and the inverted grip used for a one-edged blade, such as a katana or a Dao. The straight sword grip avoids injury by ensuring the blade is not slicing or touching the body. Practice these drills many times and enjoy your new skills!
