DAY 2. I feel this is where the fun beginnings but oh boy, I’m tired!! My arms and shoulders need so much more practice… and I’m sure that practicing with the actual sword will make it look nicer than with the remote control😅 I’m definitely going to repeat all these classes when I get my sword in hopefully 3 more weeks. So exciting! 🤩 AG

Thanks so much for the slow down version!! I even slowed down the playback speed to go slow with each movement. Wow did that burn! Also, the amount of times I whacked myself on my head and butt was numerous! :-)

I really wish there was a close up of just her hand as it did this. I keep wanting to twirl it like a baton, and that's not right. And even though she moves slow, it's still way roo fast for me. What I am going to try to do is to take screenshots on my computer and focus only on her hand and make a step by step guidebook. I have always struggled with eye hand coordination as it pertains to sports and unfortunately my learning style is text and photos in a process. I have the exact same problem with dance as I do here. Once I see it on paper, I can get it better, so I am gonna try to make my own booklet to learn from.

I am really struggling with the outside flower. I do not understand whether the sword rotates with your wrist or if your fingers rotate it. I hope my question makes sense. I tried to view it in slow motion, but I am still confused. I am dislexic so be gentle with me :'(

Same, I am not dyslexic but I just cannot figure out the outside flower. I slowed it down and just cannot get it. Did you ever get it figured out?

I'm having a little trouble following as a dyslexic too, but I am trying to mirror instead of doing the same side as her. So instead of us both doing the right side, I'm doing my right her left. It's helping.

Having same issue, dont know if just not doing it correct or if flexibility just that bad.

When I first tried the basic outside flower, I struggled with getting my wrist to be flexible enough to do the movement, but with practice it got easier on both sides. Unexpectedly, once I started getting comfortable with the figure eights, it seemed like I had a natural affinity for the inverted form. Now I can flow between both of them almost at will. You’re a really great teacher, Sabina! I’ve been practicing with pirate style sabers until my straight sword shows up. I can hardly wait to get my hands on it! 🖤🗡️

It is SO IMPORTANT to work both sides. I am hoping there will be some practice using two swords. I generally prefer dao, but most of these techniques apply well to dao and jian

Usually I have trouble following along new things like this. Really appreciate the slow speed and how much it was broken down. Not going to lie I still slowed down the speed to half and replayed a couple times, but it really helped! This was fun, going to practice!

Ok, so I am taking this one again because I kept getting confused yesterday when I did it. It’s so hard to get my mind wrapped around the flower pattern for no apparent reason lol. The second time was much better but I’ll probably come back to this a few times! Good focused explanation that’s going to be easy to find later, too.

Day 1: I'm feeling really good about these sword movements already! My carpal tunnel is acting up though :( I appreciate practicing both right and left because even though I'm right handed- my left is easier because of the carpal tunnel in my right wrist! Does anyone have advice for thise who may suffer from carpal tunnel? Or am I just doomed to make it worse lol
1 reply
sabinastorberg
sabinastorberg Staff about 2 months ago
Carpal tunnel should actually get easier with more practice! Focus on light wrist stretching before you enter into your full flower practice so that you are supporting and strengthening the wrists (which is where all the action should happen). The lightweight nature of the sword shouldn't be too straining on the body but definately listen to it and don't overdo it!

I had to watch the fingers to see that when doing the inside flowers, you keep a full grip on the sword rather than letting the fingers release as on the outside flowers. Also, when doing the regular inside flowers, she starts with the thumb facing in, but as she points the sword down, the thumb points down and the palm faces out, then the palm faces toward her body as the sword is horizontal, then as she brings it back up, the palm is up briefly before she twists her wrist back to the same starting position with palm and thumb facing to the inside (i.e., to the left if using her right hand). However, when doing the inverted inside flowers, she initially starts with turning the thumb and palm up then out as she lifts up, then facing her as she brings the sword down,, but after cutting back up the thumb and palm are facing back to the outside when finished, so to begin again, she twists the wrist so that the palm faces inward again.

You can do this! I believe the more you practice using both left and right side the more your brain will start to connect the movements easier :) Its a brain workout!

Is each half of the figure-8 at a 90-degree angle from each other, or should each flower be on the same plane for this exercise?
sabinastorberg
sabinastorberg Staff about 2 months ago
90 degrees is better because it allows more movement freedom! However if you are first learning you can practice a more static version (i.e same plane) and then flow with the figure eight as you get more comfortable!

I practice Aikido, also, and I've been starting to work on strengthening my triceps because I know it will improve my technique. These basic flowers absolutely help with that. I'm lookong forward to gaining the the skill of this more performance oriented swordwork while stengthening and incorporating it into yoga practice. I'm really looking forward the rest of this course and have hopes it will complement/supplement my existing sword discipline without creating bad habits. :)

Hi all! Sabina, I am struggling with the outside flower. I slow the video down to .25 speed but still it's like a brain freeze to track which way your hand is turning... under or over? backward or forward? Your outside flower looks like a big open circle close to your body. I can't make so big a circle at all and my sword is more pointing away from my body, making a much smaller 'circle'. I am releasing the 3 fingers, and trying to figure out if you're bending your elbow more - it just feels awkward and jerky. I guess that's normal for a beginner but, any tips? :) thx!

I am so completely behind on this, but I did want to post here that I incorporated this into a bellydance tribal fusion choreo with a saber (not the same, and swords for dancing can be quite heavy, as it's for balancing) and it came out so amazing!! I had to adjust with the weight and balance, and of course it was dancing, so incorporated other movements. I wish I could add a video here!!!

As this is only day 2, and I don't have my sword yet, I used my thin metal meter stick. It's a little sharp for the hands, but I think it helped me get a better idea of the sword work. Looking forward to the actual sword arriving, and hoping it is not much heavier. Whew, the arms are burning a bit!
