Double Sword Day 4: Half Flower Doubles

with Sabina Storberg

from Mastering the Double Sword

Welcome to the Double Sword Half Flower! This move is a bit of a mouthful to say, but it is a beautiful technique where we’ll be swaying from side to side in a half flower motion with both swords. It looks a little different than the single sword version, so we’ll take it step-by-step to make sure you feel confident. • What You’ll Learn: We are mastering the double sword version of the half flower. This variation is essentially "half of the half flower" because we don't add the outside flower to it. You'll learn to bring the tip of the sword down and behind you, then lift it into a block. • The Foundation: This move is exactly the same motion as our single sword half flower, just doubled up! You'll need to be really comfortable moving your body from side to side to create enough space for both swords to pass through. • What to Expect: We’ll start by breaking down the movement for the right and left hands individually with sets of ten. Then, we’ll practice bringing them together in unison for a set of 20, alternating which hand starts in front to ensure you're balanced. • Pro Tip: With double swords, sometimes the more you think, the more confusing it gets! Try to just get into the rhythm and find your flow. This move can be intense, so be sure to shake it out and stretch your shoulders, upper arms, wrists, and elbows afterward. Grab your swords and let's find that side-to-side sway together!
